Eat pollen?
« on: December 30, 2008, 08:53:46 pm »
I've heard that some people eat the bee pollen as a supplement.  How does one go about harvesting the pollen for human consumption?

you can get pollen traps for your hive.  they tend to be a little hard on the bees, but they work.
Someone really ought to tell them that the world of Ayn Rand?s novel was not meant to be aspirational.

You have to put a pollen trap on the hive. Looks like this www.brushymountainbeefarm.com/prodinfo.asp?number=464
You place it over the entrance so the bees have to climb through it to get in and out of the hive. While doing this the pollen is knocked off their lags and drops into a catch basin. You then take the pollen, clean all the bee parts out of it and then enjoy.
Bee pollen is an acquired taste for most people. I love the stuff, but I will not take it from my hives. It hinders brood production to take it. I am more into honey production and splitting hives.

Set up a pollen trap, but if you want bee bread (not the same thing) you can get that from frames of pollen.  Bee bread is to pollen what yogurt is to milk...

Well, not quite the same as bee bread but close, I usually mix pollen with honey, that's how I like to eat my pollen.

I often offer a little bee bread to customers on cut outs, some are leery some love it, I happen to love bee bread its a real treat!
