Concrete Pads
« on: March 14, 2009, 11:44:18 am »
I've noticed quite a few members have their hives on concrete pads.  What is the benefit of this, other than not having to cut the grass around the hive?  Just curious.

Keeps them level. Don't have weeds/grass right at the entrance to cut.

Most importantly it raises the front of the hive entrance away from smaller critters that would invade. Helps against skunks, possums, raccoons, they don't like to stand on there hind feet to dig at the hive entrance, they have a softer underbelly and bees can get them good. :)

Sorry guys but that is just to much expense for me.  A couple of concrete blocks and some 1 x 4's is all they need for me to be happy.

That's quite alright too, just make sure you don't have trees or large branches that could fall and knock out one of those boards, condemning multiple hives to the ground. I believe that has happened to someone on this board. :)
I make my own pads cause nobody makes them large enough.  :)
