Bee suit
« on: May 11, 2013, 11:44:44 am »
Hi, As I have already mentioned I am new to beekeeping. I have bought myself a bee suit but am a little concerned as it is yellow. Wont the bees be attracted to me as they think I'm a huge walking flower? I don't want to be mobbed every time I approach the hive...

My bees could care less what color I am wearing.

I've been in my bee yard wearing brown, green, red, yellow, purple, grey whatever, they pay the same amount of attention to me. Which is to say they ignore me until I start messing around in their homes.

I have found that darker colors such as navy blue or black can have a upsetting effect on the little dears.

won't matter.
Someone really ought to tell them that the world of Ayn Rand?s novel was not meant to be aspirational.

I think your smell would have more impact than the color of your bee suit.  I know it is said that bees don't like the darker colors but look at JP's videos.  He has a dark navy shirt on as often as  not.

The color of the bee suit isn't as important as the texture of the fabric. Something smooth like a close weave cotton or a polyester fabric is a lot better than a wool or open weave. They will sting no matter what you are wearing depending on thier mood.

I have a complete bee suit with zippered hood.
First of all mine is cotton, heavy cotton.
I've had hundreds of stingers in the suit but none in me so far.
Get some cotton balls and place one where the zippers for the hood meet in the front.
When you zip it up there is a small hole and it's guaranteed that a bee will find that hole.
The cotton ball will fill the gap.
I very seldom wear the complete suit though.
I went to town to a store that has used clothes.
I bought a heavy white cotton shirt for $1.50.
I sewed me a piece of Velcro at the throat.
I use a bungee cord around my waist to deter the bees when they're crawling.
I use a veil and gloves.
The complete suits, coveralls and such, are too hot during the day.
Sometimes I just wear my straw hat and regular clothes but then sometimes the gals will develop an attitude.
