Title: New to bees just looking for info!
Post by: jroark on February 11, 2013, 10:03:56 pm
I just obtained a few (10) hives due to a death in my gamily. I am gonna try and keep them going but may need some help along the way. Please. Does anyone have any good input for someone in my position?

Thanks,
Jason

The internet and this forum is your friend....Make use of both, the good news is there's a lot of good information available.  The bad news is there's no one right answer to almost any question.  So be prepared to filter through a lot of different opinions and be ready to make a decision that you feel works best for you and your bees.

Also, finding someone in your area willing to share their knowledge that's willing to let you get some hands on experience would be invaluable.  Start looking and asking around...Trying to locate a local bee club is always a good place to start.

Good Luck!  :)

Hey, Jason, I'm sorry about your loss.
There is a lot of information and opinions here, and helpful people.
Welcome, Wendy

Welcome to the forum, Jason.  Where in southern MS.  There are local clubs scattered all around.  Some at the coast, Columbia and Laurel and probably others.  There are beeks all over also.  There are lots of people with knowledge here, threads and videos.

Thank you all, I learn something new all the time. I have learned that bees are amazing creatures! I know that in the spring time I need to add supers to the hive and I have seen medium and shallow but all I have is deep supers that's extras. 1 for each hive. Do I need more extras? Also some of the frames don't have a foundation will the bees build there on? and some do but the comb is old and black looking is it ok to use that?

Hey, Jason. I'm new here, too. So sorry for your loss. It's so great you found this forum - these people know their bees! I hope you find local support you need as well. Blessings!

PS: My mother is from Jeff Davis County MS.

Jroark,
You may want to go to Buds in April. It's a gathering of forum members doing bee stuff and making connections. It's free of chatrge and a pretty laid back weekend.
