Can anyone tell me what is going on here?
« on: May 22, 2010, 02:20:19 am »
Tuesday the 18th of May a swarm moved into one of my bait hives.  I have been letting them get moved in and have not done an inspection yet.

I walked by the bait hive on my way to the mail box and saw something and do not know what is going on.  I am hoping someone has an idea.  The weather was cool.  It had been raining or misting all day.

This is what I saw:

Normal bee stuff, its called bearding, this is not a large example but the same, there just doing there thing, might be full already, real big swarm, and no were for them to go, I would pull that down and put it were you want it, check and see it they got room, heck could be so large you need another hive body, never know.. LOL

LOoks good to me tho, wish I could catcha swarm. Congrats on the swarm.

That's how they demonstrate their disdain for upper entrances.  No, just kidding.  Like MbN siad,  I think you got yourself a nice big swarm and they need more room.... :-D

You  better check them.  They may need you to add the penthouse suite.

Thanks for the advice and the congrats.  I just checked and the two deeps were pretty full so I added a medium on top that needs to be drawn out.   :-D

A follow up question: how long after taking up residence until the queen begins laying again?

I would give them a week before disturbing again. They may abscond if bothered too often. In this case, that would be 11 days total. You should have larva by then.
