Resizing photos

I post my pictures here by hosting them on my own webspace.  I size all of my photos 800x600 for viewing.  Here's one:

 

My biggest problem with this camera is that the whites are alwlays oversaturated, no matter what setting I select.  Oh well.  This photo is from last night, the girls really loved the daturas even as it was getting dark! 

One piece of advice I heard years ago is always take your pictures at the highest resolution your camera is capable of.  You can always resize for various other uses, but you can never make a picture bigger than it is once taken.

That being said, I think thumbnails are the appropriately netiquette way.  8-)

Yes,  thumbnails are best.  We have many users on dial-up, and full size images make it next to impossible to view a forum.

Rob, Ann, a little confused here.

There is not a doubt in my mind that seeing a picture, like that beauty that Ann posted sure makes for a nice looking picture on the forum instead of thumbnails. The problem I have with thumbnails is that I have to click on the picture and it takes a few seconds for imageshack to load the picture, plain and simply a nuisance, don't like it.

Ann, you said that you posted the pictures using your webspace.  I would be interested in how you do this and if forum members that still have to use dialup, if it is slow for them or if something done in your webspace makes it as easy as thumbnails to look at.  Curiosity never got this cat.

Well, I don't post fullsize pictures at all, they are always resized, and 800x600 isn't a hardship for dialup users, it's been the standard in alt.binaries.pictures.gardens for years with no complaints and happy viewers.

I have a website called annzoid.com.  I've got a folder up there under Images where I put any photos I post on the web.  I really dislike those photo sites that everyone uses, Imageshack is especially slow to load.  I much prefer being able to view the picture without having to click on anything additional.  Thumbnails are fine, but too small, and the wait for the picture to open - it's as long as the way that a dialup user would have to open an 800x600 photo in the first place. 

Most ISP's offer webspace, many people don't use it at all.  If you've got it available, then all you need is an FTP program (Filezilla is freeware and a great program, there's also an extension to Firefox called FireFTP that works extremely well, it is also free, although they appreciate donations, which I did).  Use the FTP program to upload the picture to your webspace.  Then you simply link to your photo by typing in the URL.  It's not as simple as using those photo pages, but it's not that hard, either, just different.  If anyone needs any help with it I'd be glad to help out.

As for imageShack, it is an easy integrated solution for someone who has no webspace of their own or does not know how to size images correctly.  As you can see from the tests below, full sized images kill those on dial-up. We have no love for ImageShack, other than it does provide a solution for photo newbees.

I ran a few test for you Cindi.  If you want to try some for yourself, here is a program that will slow your connection down to dial-up.  If you do test, remember to clear your cache in between tests, or you won't get the true results.

I tested at 28.8K which is faster than I can get at home.  On a good day I'm lucky to get 26K.

Ann's full size image (2832x2128) took 3:13 minutes to load.  So if all 11 of Annette's photos where that size????????

Ann's posted image (800x600) took 0:10 minutes to load and at 14.4K it took 0:28 minutes.  A few images of this size wouldn't be an issue, but larger quantities may.  The problem is getting people with no experience resizing images and falling into the first scenario.

Where the images are stored (own server/imageshack/etc) has only a minor affect on speed,  the size is the biggest factor.

Wouldn't we all.  No offense to Annette (I'll just use her post as am example because it is here),  but I would rather see 11 thumbnail and click on the ones I'm interested in verses waiting minutes for 3 photos of a pond with bees drinking and not getting to a photo after them that I may really be interested in.  Many times I end up skipping a post because of too many large images, so I miss them all.

If clicking on thumbnails seems like such a burden,  I suggest you do some testing of your own to see how insignificant it really is compared to not being able to see images at all because they take to long to load.

 We are pretty lenient when folks know how to size properly and post reasonable quantities of pictures.  We make ImageShack available for those that aren't savvy enough.  I would hate to have to start banning people for posting inappropriate size and quantities.  If someone many photos to share, getting a photo album hosting site and link to it is more appropriate.

No, you posted a resized image (800x600) which is fine.  I loaded the full image just to give Cindi an example of when someone doesn't know how to resize and posts a full image.

Feel free to keep posting your resized (800x600) images, you seem to post reasonable quantities at a time, so it is not a problem.

Sorry if I caused any confusion.  I just used you and Annette as examples because your posts were close to the topic.

I will post this photo just as a test and not to upset anyone. I uploaded (or downloaded) this photo from a website called photobucket where they stated that I had resized the image to 800 x 600

If this is true, please let me know that I can use this website to change the image to 800 x 600 and thereby post photos this size.

Sounds like you're experiencing overexposure.  I'd have to see some other examples but the one you posted would look better without the flash.  You'll have a long shutter time, especially in that sort of low-light scenario = tripod mandatory (else you'll get motion blur).

Cool on the self hosting.  If you want to do your own (or any other) server and still use thumbnails (outside of the integrated imageshack option), here's the code:

Rob you went to a lot of work to bring to light the comments you provided about image size.  Thank you very much.  I have been working with Irfanview and am having a lot of success getting my pictures resized and saved.  Tomorrow I am going to put some picture onto our forum.  Today I am heading outside to finish off a huge job of weeding that I began yesterday.  Yeah!!!  This rainy weather sure has made for monster gardens.  You should see my sister's collard greens.  Have a wonderful day, beautiful life.  Cindi

Thank you Cindi for the comment about my hair. Sometimes I just don't know about keeping it so long. One day I will just chop it all off. I had very short hair for many, many years. I decided to let it grow about 3 years ago and it grew really fast.

Those huge things are collard greens???? I love cooking the green leafy vegetables which are so healthy for you.

Annette.  Yep, collard greens, I love them, they are full of healthy beneficial minerals.  Evidently one of the most rich of all vegies, in fact.  I have long hair too, I always have it in a pony tail.  When I worked in Vancouver for so many years typing research, I had very short "office" type hair.  As a young person, always had long hair, but had to look the "part" of the yuppies, so my hair was nicely kept short. NOw I am back to my 'hippie" years and it is long, yeah!!!  Love it, the pony tail makes me look many years younger (ha, isn't that a good thing ;).  Keep your hair long, it looks good.  Have a wonderful day, best of life.  Cindi

I chop them up into bite size pieces, then cook in boiling salted water for about 6-8 minutes. Drain it and let it dry off a bit.  I then fry it up in olive oil with spices (can use garlic, onion first ) I use mostly indian spices (cumin seeds, mustard seeds, cumin powder, coriander powder chili powder and salt, and something called hing -from the indian store.) I do not cook with much onion and this spice is like a replacement.

Cook for a long as you like, I like to fry it up really good until almost crispy and somewhat brown a little.
