Title: Propolis Tea
Post by: HAB on November 02, 2009, 02:19:49 pm
Does anyone have a recipe for Propolis Tea? :)

Edited to add the following.

Trying to find a "Propolis Tea" to treat a throat infection. Its a small lesion caused by an antibiotic resistant staff infection" that has been has been treated unsuccessfully by a dozen different Doctors over the past five years.  Hope it will respond to the "Propolis Tea" or propolis tincture or ingestion of straight propolis and honey.  The individual suffering with this ailment is at her wits end and I suggested treating with propolis.  She loves teas of all kinds. And hoped to find one made with propolis.

Any help would be greatly apreciated. :)

This is what I used......
http://www.tc.umn.edu/~reute001/htm-files/Propolis%20extract.html (http://www.tc.umn.edu/~reute001/htm-files/Propolis%20extract.html)

We used everclear and mixed it 50/50 with water and put it in a mason jar in the cabnet for 6-8 weeks.  Then we will put into smaller 1 oz jars with droppers.  Whamo you have christmas gifts for all.

Yes 50/50 is grain and water but you wouldnt need to mix if you use 100 proof vodka.  I like everclear better I dont like the smell of vodka :-X

I have to laugh out lout at myself. I saw this method mentioned in one of the books I read before and forgot about it. I scraped some propolis from my feeders when I cleaned them up for the year. I made some tea one evening and put some honey in of coarse and some propolis and TRIED to dissolve it in the hot liquid. It mostly broke down but what did not got on my teeth and I was supprized as to how much kick the taste was. It was as though you put some sort of hot spice in it. I looked like a dog or cat that just had peanut butter that kept licking to get it all.LOL!! :-D :-D Next time I will make the Tincture Concentrate.

That's what happened the first time I tried to make some.  Now I just boil a small biscuit size piece for ten minutes, skim off the wax and add the remaining liquid to Green Tea.  It really perks up the Green Tea.  Don't know how beneficial it might be, but it sure beats tossing it out. :)

Was hoping someone would have a sure fire recipe.

Maybe this is a thread sabotage, but does anybody have ideas for somehow processing propolis into flakes for use in soapmaking? Thanks!

The tea sounds intriguing :) Especially the solvent first used!

I would also think that an ounce of PGA 190 proof would cure some aches and pains and disinfect abrasions even without the dissolved propolis.

And "yes"  enough of it would make you fly

worth a try I suppose

Cool,

let us know if the treatment is successful.

I have had great success with bee venom relieving back pain so I have an open mind about this kind of stuff.

Thought that maybe some background from the National Library of Medicine / National Institutes of Heath (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/natural/patient-propolis.html) may shed some light.

The way were making it gives Green Tea a minty taste.  But leaves a slight waxy residue on the teeth.  Not a bad concoction at all, at least to me.  Have had many an over the counter medication that were far harder to swallow.

Besides if you do not strain the alcohol off with this tea the only thing you will see is the sheep while you sleep. :-D

We don't use the Tincture of Propolis.  We boil propolis with water and use the resulting liquid 1 teaspoonful to a cup of Green Tea.

What is the consistency like after you boil it ? Is it like peanut butter, or what ? I wonder too, which way is better for  preserving its beneficial properties ?

We:

Slow boil a 1 1/2 inch ball of propolis in a quart of water until the propolis dissolves.

Allow to cool.

Skim off wax.

Add 1 teaspoon of the liquid to a cup of tea. It is thin as water and gives the tea a minty taste.  But leaves a thin waxy coating it mouth for a few minutes.

She is drinking 3 cups of Green Tea daily sweetened with 1 teaspoon of honey and 1 teaspoon of the propolis liquid.  Trying to fight a resistant staff infection causing a lesion 1/2 way down the esophagus. Been using it for 4 days now.  It seems to be bothering her less, but we are withholding judgment until her next Dr's appointment in two weeks. She has had the lesion for years.  Her Dr's have tried everything, including surgery, but it keeps coming back.
