Identifying bees
« on: February 26, 2007, 05:28:10 pm »
from the pic can someone tell what kind of bees are here? Is there a way to get them out of the tree other than cutting the tree? In person they are really dark.
 Thank for the help.

I'm referring to the 4 species.  Apis mellifera, Apis dorsata, Apis florea, and Apis cerana.   Only Apis mellifera exists in the US and, therefore, these are Apis mellifera.

If the picture was taken in Louisiana then I'd say they are Apis mellifera.  :)

Look like Italians to me. If they start making extreme gestures with their hands than they are definitly italians. :-D

Many will tell you that the strains of honeybees in the US are very closely realated now.  Just looking at color, I'd say that they are italian but, that's just a guess.  All in all, if they are gentle to work, good honey producers and draw wax, I don't mind what exactly they are.
