Cold weather again? Watch your food stores
« on: April 11, 2012, 06:30:11 pm »
With a lot of overwintered colonies ramped up early this year,be sure to check on the food situation now that the bees are cooped up again.During the days when it's cool and the bees are not flying they may be consuming huge amounts of stores with the large amount of brood many hives are raising right now.
Just be careful,it would be a shame to starve an otherwise booming hive now.

I am worried about my garden tonight.   I think my bees will be just fine.

Bud that is because you live so far north.  Was 78  here,and may get to 48 tonight.
I am not making little of the people where there is a lot of cold weather, just messing with Bud.  I know that there is a good bit of the country that has lots of cold and very cold weather, just glad we don't usually.  May this cold snap only be a day or two for you.  Good luck to all.

Joe

Thanks for the reminder!
The pedigree of honey
Does not concern the bee;
A clover, any time, to him
Is aristocracy.

Most of the hives I have been removing have been empty or very low on stores because of the early build up. Thank goodness I left supers on for them to over winter or the die off would be severe. Very strange winter, extremely mild.

We got through last night without a frost.   :)   The blackberries are all white here with blooms.   Should be very nice this weekend.

Well id have to agree i had a small hive overwinter in a 5 frame nuc that was a queen from a hive that i made two nucs out of last fall.  She is a very productive layer and very gentle no smoke temperment workers.  To make the long story short i went into the hive a month ago and she had just started laying and i had 3 deep frames of honey.  Went into them today all five frames are solid brood top to bottom side to side with just a bit of honey on the corners of the frames.  It made me nervous to see how close they were to starvation. I will be going threw my other hives this weekend to check for stores.  Chris

Funny thing, I had 2 swarms in the yard when I got home today.   Some cold snap.

If I may break in on the weather envy, half my hives have nothing left capped!  If they weren't getting welfare, they would starve as their is no nectar a-tall out there.  They are just starting to get some pollen.   Cold weather keeps out the chiggers, fire ants shb and other riff-raff.  I like it here.  I just wish I could grow peaches.
