Title: I need more chickens
Post by: Jerrymac on March 17, 2009, 10:35:19 am
Can't believe it was only last month I had a refrigerator full of eggs. Even gave up and took 240 eggs to the food bank. Now I can't get enough eggs. Keep selling out.

Oh what to do what to do.  :?

Get you some cickens that lay larger eggs, that's a start.

Sometimes I can't get the egg carton shut because the eggs are so big.

So I have to get a picture of an egg carton that won't shut all the way because of the egg being too big?

So I had one and a half dozen eggs when a man called wanting some. So I said yes I had a dozen. He drove all the way out here to get that dozen eggs. But before he got here my wife calls and there are four people she works with wanting some..... by now I had collected more eggs and had another dozen. I told her I might be able to fill their orders by Saturday (off the top of the head guess) but next week my very first customer is going to want eggs and her lowest order is 60 eggs. Her biggest was 96 eggs.

Jerry, how many chickens do you have? I they just slowing down and going into molt or you just need to get yourself some more egg laying machines?
You could probably get some started chickens around there, I find the sex links lay like crazy but they tend to have reproductive problems later on down the road or they burn out,
the rhode island reds, nh reds and buff orpingtons are always in the next boxes but if you really want to impress your customers get some of the colored egg laying chickens.
They love to get those green and blue eggs and the chickens are so pretty, no two easter eggers ever look alike.
I hate having to integrate new chickens to the flock,(just did it yesterday in 2 different flocks as a matter of fact) but I use to hover around them and make sure no one picked on them, which of course they do but now I have so many I just wish em luck and toss em in the coop.
They all work it out themselves, that pecking order, but I use to stress too much about it.
So anyway, how much daylight are you getting right now for laying, or are your still using the artificial lights?
Sounds like you need more chickens to me.

They are still laying the same, just the customer count has gone up.
I only have two blue layers right now. Would like to get more.

JM, I'm like you, more market than product!  I got more pullets this month so should be laying around July I hope!  I love the EE's, like Natalie said, no two are alike & color combinations are beautiful!  They have good personalities too! J

Jerry, I would love to see some pics of those large eggs your hens are laying. Are they double yokers?

They are almost as amusing as the parrots, only in a different way.  You won't be able to stop @ just 2.  I would go with 4-5 cause then when they are slowed down for winter or moulting you will still get a couple of eggs a day.  WAYYYYY better than store bought & can be used to suppliment the cockatoo diet.  Specially for breeding.  I just toss em in the blender raw, shell & all then nuke or scramble or add them to "bird muffins" with cornmeal, wwflour, veggie/fruit bits, anything on hand.  If you boil em first it's hard to get the shells small enough & harder to clean out the vitamix! Goats are a hoot too...make sure you have a good fence...little lambs eat ivy, my goat won't touch it..not as tasty as my apple tree, honeysuckle or roses!
