Crypt Beekeeping?
« on: April 25, 2008, 11:26:23 pm »
Ok, hands down strangest place I have ever encountered bees. My wife being a little superstitious, hey, she's cuban, ya, I got those spanish saint statues in my bedroom, doesn't every cubano have these statues in the bedroom?

She made me swear that I would say a prayer before doing this removal. You will understand why in a minute.

Say your prayers before viewing pics: http://picasaweb.google.com/pyxicephalus/April252008

Cool picks JP, It did not look as if they had been there long but might have already stored some honey. Thanks for sharing JP, I get the feeling I am there with you. :)

Jody, I don't know why I forgot to mention it, but they are having some kind of burial on Monday concerning this particular crypt. The family is aware of the bees.

Hey, I like your posts as well Jody, I was just telling my wife how you sleep with the dog, cat and pig. This was you right?

I was wondering if the deceased was once a beek.  Wouldn't that be creepy?

That would be very cool indeed Dave, the thought entered my mind as well.

Hey Brian, I believe the deceased enjoyed the company, was probably sad to see them go!

now that is cool.

i have a thing about graveyards.  i came back from your neighborhood with tons fo crypt and cemetery pics.  i never saw a place where there are bodies buried by the side of the road, in back yards, odd plots of land....all over the place!  got run out of a cemetery in Italy.  i guess they don't like you taking pictures in their grave yards.
Someone really ought to tell them that the world of Ayn Rand?s novel was not meant to be aspirational.

See now you have bees that have take the soul of the occupant.

The graveyards are one of the things I like best about New Orleans. Especially when you get into the old ones that are in French.

Awesome cut out.

And Yes all the cubans have those little statues ask me I am in Miami.

I also have the hatian voodoo community if you need assistance.

Wait until you get to Algiers.

Sincerely,
Brendhan

they always said that when a beek dies his family should say goodbye to the bees in the hives for them. Wonder if this fellow's family forgot to say goodbye?

Really cool pics.

They used to do this in ancient Mayan culture.  The relationship between the bees and their keeper was very intimate.  When the beek died, the new beekeeper would have to break the news to the bees and give them several weeks to soak it in.  There was a bunch more involved with the process of letting the bees grieve but I can't remember exactly.  There was a whole chapter devoted to this in "Letters from the Hive" by Stephen Buchmann.

I figured they were a swarmed honor guard...
Everyone said it couldn't be done. But he with a chuckle replied, "I won't be one to say it is so, until I give it a try."  So he buckled right in with a trace of a grin.  If he had a worry he hid it and he started to sing as he tackled that thing that couldn't be done, and he did it.  (unknown)
