Getting ready
« on: May 08, 2012, 03:30:16 pm »
Husband is going to teach me how to assemble frames tonight.  I have had experience building things in shop class and in college building sets and such but I am excited to be learning how to "take care of my girls" :-D

Some day I would like to learn how to build a hive from top to bottom but for now we buy UN-assembled wooden ware at a very reasonable price.  Can't wait to get the rest of our bees in a few weeks.  Also been putting our names out for swarms so have to be ready for that!

Wish me luck tonight!

Be very careful where you keep your hands when using an air nailer to assemble frames.  I’ve had nails angle out the sides of the frames; very bad news if your hand is there.  I’ve also had nails shoot right through the wood once of twice.  After one grazed my thumb, I now make SURE my paws are clear of any possible trajectory of the nails.

I have a line in my thumb when a frame nail shot through a  2 x 4.   End of the board was soft and the nail blew through it.  Had to put my thumb in the bench vise to pull that sucker out.  And the line of where is was is still there today.   Staples are a piece of cake to pull out.

Thanks everyone!  We got the deep frames assembled and I even put the wax foundations on.  It was pretty easy except I fired of the air gun and my poor husband got and hard blast of air right in his ear.  Whoops  :-D!  It was fun though and can't wait to get to the harder stuff!
