How To Use Brushy Mountain pheromone lure
« on: March 09, 2013, 03:29:04 pm »
I'm trying to use an old nuc box as a swarm trap.  I have some frames with drawn comb in there.  The Brushy Mountain pheromone lure comes in a little tube.  Each tube is in it's own little plastic bag.  There were no instructions.  I read somewhere that you should leave the tube in the plastic bag and place it in the box.  Can anyone confirm that you leave it in the bag?

If I hold it up to my nose, I can smell it.

Thanks.

If you can smell it you can bet the bees do! I've never used a commercial swarm lure so I'm not sure how to but I've seen them that are meant to be used as just the tube tube with the cap removed.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. Thanks.  I also just found this on Bee Source:

I bought a pheromone lure from Brushy Mountain. It is a little vial that came in a small plastic bag.  Instructions only say do not open vial. So do I just take it our of bag and put it in my swarm trap.

Mann Lake sells the same thing, but the vile is in a little paper bag.  They say don't take it out of the paper bag.

I guess if I take it out of the plastic bag the only risk is that it may not last the 3 months it says it will last.

I took the lure I got from Brushymountain Bee Farm and just stapled it to the inside of the swarm trap.
I let the staple straddle the tube.

Capt44, so you took the vile out of the bag, but you didn't open the vile?

The stuff in the lure is most likely Lemongrass oil.  Don't sweat over how to use it.   You just want the scent to get around.  Folks here on the forum use hundreds of methods of applying the lure to their hives.   Mostly I just roll a little paper towel between 2 frames and put some lure on it.   It will last through swarm season.  You just want the scent in and around the hive for the bees to find it.
