New to bee keeping video of frames from hive
« on: June 30, 2016, 01:26:57 pm »
Hi, hoping someone can look at this video of these frames and figure out what is going on. Picked up 2 nucs/transferred to my boxes. This hive seems weak compared to the other one. This one has very little activity going on at the entrance. I skipped the first 2 frames as they were filled with capped honey and slowed the split and slowed down the video. Thanks for any help.

When did you get the nuc?
Go back to the seller and get a new nuc. You do not have enough bees to protect that hive and the Small Hive Beetles will bee taking it over soon. I could not see any wet brood, I suspect you do not have a queen in this hive.
Sorry to be the barer of bad news. I would act fast, the beekeeper can add bees and eggs to save this hive to minimize his losses.

Definately take it back. That is not a 5 frame nuc.

That's a queen cup. All bees build those but don't necessarily turn them into a queen cell. If there is an egg or larva in there then it will turn into a queen cell. You can also check to see if there is royal jelly inside or if workers are frequently poking their heads in

Get back with the seller. It could be an honest mistake. They may have grabbed the wrong box of bees and gave them to you. I did that once but I caught it before the buyer did.
